In a sign of disapproval of the performance of the ruling All India NR Congress(AINRC) Government, the Puducherry unit of the Bhartiya Janatha Party, a key ally, said Chief Minister N. Rangasamy should pay adequate attention to streamline certain welfare schemes and implement measures to meet the expectations of the public from the Narendra Modi-led Union government at the Centre.
The cadres of the local BJP unit under its general secretary V. Saminathan undertook a novel protest against the government for poor maintenance of roads in Lawspet area. They re-laid the pot-holes on the road with concrete mixture.
Talking to The Hindu , Mr. Saminathan said, “The main expectation of the public from all MLAs was good roads in the Union Territory. Now all roads are in a deplorable condition. Paucity of funds was cited as one of reasons for the present situation. But the Union government allocated sufficient funds to the Puducherry Government. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy should therefore redesign and streamline certain programmes.”
He pointed out that in no other state, free rice was distributed to this extent. “Free rice is given to all, including those having a salary of Rs.50,000 and income tax payee and business magnates. In other states, the commodity was given to only to the poor and needy. Through the free rice scheme, a sum of Rs. eight crore goes to the rich. If this scheme is streamlined, around Rs. seven crore can be saved by the government. This amount can be used for improving the condition of the roads. .”
Mr. Saminathan added that in Lawspet, students meet with accidents daily because of the deplorable condition of the roads. Without examining and inspecting the spot, bills were released. Due to this, people continue are put to a lot of hardships, he said.
“Chief Minister Mr. Rangasamy should give due attention to necessary schemes. Development of roads and health facilities should be given priority. The Chief Minister should implement and streamline the schemes and save funds allocated so that it could be spent on important welfare measures for the people. ”, Mr. Saminathan added.
