SI suspended for demanding bribe

A Sub-Inspector attached to Orleanpet police station has been suspended after a WhatsApp message with a video showing the officer taking bribe from an engineer went viral on Saturday.

Police said the Sub-Inspector allegedly demanded bribe of Rs. 30,000 from Senthil, an engineer hailing from Nellithope for not filing a case against him on a complaint preferred by one Kumar, a contractor.

The video reportedly taken by Mr. Senthil on his mobile phone showed the Sub-Inspector Arumugam demanding Rs. 30,000. In the video Senthil is seen counting the notes and handing it over to Mr. Arumugam.

However, the SI allegedly demands Rs.10,000 more and Mr. Senthil is seen handing over the cash.

The video footage went viral on WhatsApp creating ripples among the police higher-ups.

An inquiry was conducted and based on the report the SI was suspended by Inspector General of Police Praveer Ranjan.
