Several prominent leaders stayed away from a meeting convened on Wednesday by DMK State convener M.A.S. Subramanian to draw up a plan to celebrate party president and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s 91 birthday falling on June 3.

Ahead of the meeting, several leaders, including R.V. Janakiraman, former Chief Minister, and S.P. Sivakumar, MLA and former Minister, had furnished letters announcing their decision to abstain from the meeting as their demand for tabling the accounts of fund collection by the party had been ignored.

They had also expressed unhappiness over not being given important roles during election work.

The DMK meeting passed 10 resolutions, including one on the imperative to strengthen the party and reinvigorate cadre, looking forward to the Assembly elections in 2016. The DMK had fared poorly in the recent Lok Sabha elections in which its candidate Najeem forfeited deposit.
