On a sultry Sunday evening, as people thronged the Promenade Beach to enjoy the cool breeze, many did not expect they would be treated to classical and zumba dance.

While plastic chairs were being arranged at Gandhi Thidal for the Sunday cultural evening organised by the Tourism Department, a group of dancers stormed Le Cafe, dancing to loud music. Students of Le Debut Fitness Studio performed zumba dance for an hour from 5 p.m. on Promenade Beach to spread the message about W4 Marathon.

Rotary Club of Pondicherry Beach Town in collaboration with Le Debut Fitness Studio presented the W4-run for safe water to be held on October 2. “The marathon is being organised to create awareness about safe drinking water. Many water packaging companies would meet on October 1 and 2 in Puducherry to discuss the different techniques involved in packaging drinking water, the challenges faced by the water packaging companies and the best practices to provide safe drinking water. The marathon is part of the awareness campaign,” said Arun Tipandjan, Project Chair, Rotary Club of Pondicherry Beach Town.

A few metres away from Le Cafe, people were getting ready to watch the classical dance performance organised by Tourism Department. Meanwhile, few students and professionals gathered at Gandhi Thidal wearing gloves and holding plastic bags. They slowly moved towards the rocks and started collecting garbage. “We have taken this initiative to clean the beach every Sunday from 5 pm to 7 pm. We started with just six to seven volunteers, now 50 people have come to be part of it,” said S. Kannan, a volunteer who works for Clean Energy Solar Solutions in Puducherry.

Marc Reversat, a French national, said that he volunteered since it was important to save the environment and keep it clean.
