Self-medication and indiscriminate use of over-the-counter medications like paracetamol can lead to fulminant (acute) liver failure, says a note on the occasion of World Liver Day (April 19) issued by Jipmer.

According to the note issued by Uma Prakashbabu, Nursing Sister, Surgical Gastroenterology Department, Jipmer, even certain herbal medications could cause liver damage. Exercise to control cholesterol, taking Hepatitis B vaccination, consumption of a balanced diet, with hygienic food and drinking water are all tips for a healthy liver listed by the note. The note further recommends avoiding alcohol and smoking.

It also advises those detected with liver disease to go in for regular check ups.

Some of the common liver diseases include Fatty liver, viral hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, drug induced damage and liver cancer.
