The much-awaited day for the local administration in Puducherry to start segregation of waste came on Monday. Puducherry and Oulgaret Municipalities were to provide two separate containers to collect the segregated waste.

The Department of Local Administration had announced that the sanitation workers would collect biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste from households and commercial establishments in separate containers.

Puducherry and Oulgaret municipalities have engaged Swachatha Corporation workers to approach the households or commercial establishments from 6 am to 2 pm on a daily basis to collect the segregated waste. The waste collected will be transported to generate organic compost from bio degradable and resource recovery will be done with the non bio-degradable waste.

LAD Director Mohamed Mansoor said on Monday that it would take at least two to three days to know to what extent this initiative have been successfully implemented in Puducherry region.

“There might have been procedural issues and delay in timing to collect waste on the first day. It will take some time to streamline this process,” he said.

While many residents are still not aware of segregating waste, sanitation workers have not approached many households to collect the segregated waste. Residents of Roja Street, Chamundi Street in Venkata Nagar complained that the sanitation workers have not come to their streets to collect waste for the past two days.

The department is yet to spread the message of waste segregation to the entire Puducherry region through the handbills.

“We started distributing handbills creating awareness of segregation of waste only on Friday. It has to reach more than a lakh people and it will take some time,” said Mr. Mansoor.
