Secretariat official held on graft charge in Puducherry

The complainant had approached S. Manivannan, an assistant in the Home Department in the office of the Chief Secretary for processing the visa application of his mother.

Sleuths from the anti-corruption Branch of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Chennai, arrested an official of the Chief Secretariat here on Friday on charges of allegedly demanding and accepting bribe to process extension of a visa.

A release from CBI said the complainant had approached S. Manivannan, an assistant in the Home Department in the office of the Chief Secretary for processing the visa application of his mother.

However, Manivannan demanded a bribe of Rs. 3,000 from the complainant to process the application. The latter approached the CBI who laid a trap and caught the accused red handed while accepting the bribe.

He was produced before a local court in Puducherry and remanded to 14 days judicial custody.

Searches were also conducted at the residence of the accused and further investigations are on.
