In a bizarre form of protest, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA Omsakthi Sekar and his supporters on Thursday locked up officials and staff of an office of the Puducherry Electricity Department to express their anguish over frequent power outages.

On Thursday morning, Mr. Sekar accompanied by cadres, approached the collection centre of the Electricity Department where a few staff were working inside.

They locked the office using a long chain and staged a gherao in protest against the frequent power cuts.

As word spread, top officials of Electricity Department and a police squad rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the protesters.

It was only after securing an assurance than the power situation would be improved that the agitators left after opening the lock.

Later, addressing the media, Mr. Sekar said, “Frequent power cuts in my constituency Nellithope are wreaking havoc with the lives of the public and traders. The protest was to highlight their woes. The government should take steps to curb the frequent power cuts. Or otherwise, my party will intensify our stir”, he said.
