The Union Territory of Puducherry Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson S. Devipriya has urged people or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to register a complaint with the police against those involved in begging with their children and said legal action would be taken against the parents.
The Commission, after ensuring that the beggars are the biological parents of the children, would initiate steps to rehabilitate the children.
The Puducherry Commission for Protection of Child Rights (PCPCR) had organised an introductory meeting with key functionaries of child welfare departments from all the four regions of the State. The Collector and the Member Secretary of the Commission were invited as the chief guest.

In a press release, Ms. Devipriya said the meeting was organised with the objective of disseminating information about the establishment, constitutional powers and functions of the commission.
The commission looked into the status report of the child rights violation cases reported and action taken in the State.
“A discussion was held on the present practices followed or challenges or gaps in the implementation of the acts, programme or services by the key actors. We also discussed building network, linkages and coordination with structures for bringing out welfare measures for the children in the State,” she said.
The key functionaries of Juvenile Justice Board, Child Welfare Committee, District Inspection Committee, District Adoption Committee, Integrated Child Protection Scheme programme staff and childline participated.
