The Opposition parties have slammed the government for failing to expedite relief measures to those affected by the heavy rain.

The Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) condemned the ruling AINRC Government for allegedly not extending any immediate relief measure to those who were affected due to recent rain.

A meeting of block level office bearers was chaired by its president and party MLA A. Namassivayam.

Former Union Minister of State and senior Congress leader V. Narayanasamy and Leader of Opposition V. Vaithilingam also participated in the meeting.

Releasing a press release after taking stock of the situation, the party said people and farmers of the Union Territory were severely affected due to rain and strong winds. It also said the lethargy of the UT government is highly condemnable while neighbouring Tamil Nadu has been extending relief measures to its people who were affected due to rain. They urged Puducherry Government to take quick steps to provide Rs. 4 lakh compensation each for the loss of life, Rs. 25,000 per acre for the loss of crop and besides giving Rs. 10,000 each to the families who were affected due to rain.

‘No precautionary measures’

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Friday said people of the Union Territory were severely affected as government failed to take any preparatory measures before the onset of monsoon.

In a release, CPI (M) unit secretary R. Rajangam alleged that the government has not taken precautionary measures ahead of monsoon and not desilted the canals, feeder canals and water bodies.

Farmers incurred heavy loss as they lost crops such as paddy, plantain trees and sugarcane in Karikilampakkam, Nettapakkam, Mannadipet, Ariyakuppam, Nettapakkam and other areas of Puducherry. He also asked the government to shift the people to safe location from low-lying areas as the rain continues.

Stating that the livelihood of several are being affected due to continuous rain, he said the government should provide Rs.3,000 as compensation to the unorganised workers, construction workers, auto-workers, street and roadside vendors.

He said the government should take immediate steps to mitigate the damage and take preventive measure against the spread of epidemic diseases.
