Give immediate attention to industries

My best wishes to the new government to be sworn in shortly in Puducherry. Though there are many things to be accomplished, I would like to mention a few which deserve immediate attention.

The closed industrial establishments should be reopened. Secondly, terminal benefits should be settled to the retired and voluntarily retired employees of the public sector undertakings, along with interest for the period of delay.

The traffic problem in Puducherry city should be addressed and the train services should be increased. Besides, the airport should be reopened. The new government should concentrate on developing commercial activities in the Puducherry port.

Shun sluggishness in governance

The Assembly polls was a big challenge to most of the major parties and the poll outcome showed that the voters cannot be taken for granted.

The performance of some parties or their candidates has shown that the electorate have a yardstick of their own and decide before casting their votes. Winning the election is not the end in itself for the parties as it is the beginning of the responsibility of providing good governance. When the other states that went to polls as Puducherry had geared up the process of formation of new ministries, Puducherry is apparently sluggish in taking steps to go in for ministry formation. As the high commands of the Congress and DMK are outside the Union Territory, the necessity to get the nod of these high commands has been virtually causing delay for ministry formation.

The new government should take steps to fulfil all the promises held out during the run up to the polls. They should concentrate in strengthening the fiscal base of Puducherry, provide jobs to the youth without any discrimination, traffic management, expediting construction of infrastructures and also expansion of educational opportunities for the youth.

Puducherry offers good scope in so many fronts and what is needed is an action plan or vision document to tap the potential The higher education sector calls for a thorough revamp and private players in professional colleges should also adhere to the conditions on which they are permitted to start their colleges here.

Revamp electricity department

The new government should ensure that they revamp the electricity department completely. Payment of electricity bills should be made hassle free like BSNL, all the faulty electric meters should be changed at the government’s cost as being done in Tamil Nadu, all canals crisscrossing the town should be desilted and cleaned.

The government should ban plastic. Pavements along all major roads should be cleared of vendors and shops and made usable by pedestrians.

Bus shelters should be provided near Sivaji Statue for the convenience of passengers travelling towards Chennai on the East Coast Road. They should ban speakers at places of worship to prevent noise pollution and auto rickshaw fares to be regulated and properly working meters to be fixed in all auto rickshaws.
