Rangasamy appointed Opposition leader

August 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 12:04 pm IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Putting an end to speculation, the All India N R Congress has unanimously appointed party founder and former Chief Minister N. Rangasamy as the Opposition leader and P.R.N. Thirumurugan as his deputy in the Legislative Assembly.

Party legislators met in a hotel on Sunday night and unanimously decided to appoint Mr. Rangasamy as the party’s legislative head in the Assembly.

The MLAs decided to appoint N.S. Jayabal as the party chief whip.

The appointment brings to an end months of speculation whether Mr. Rangasamy would skip the Assembly. His decision to stay away from the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and subsequent oath-taking of newly elected MLAs in June led to more speculation about his future course of action.
