The police have filed a case of abetment to suicide against five faculty members of the private engineering college in Madagadipet following the suicide of a girl student Vinothini on Monday.

The FIR has been filed under Section 306 of the India Penal Code against Ernest Paul, Bhavani, Geetha, Priyadarshini and Sethupathi following a complaint by the girl’s father, Ilango.

He had alleged that his daughter had been “harassed” by the faculty members leading to her suicide, police said.

On Monday, Vinothini had jumped off the third floor of the private college and the body was taken to Jipmer for post-mortem. In the meantime, a deputy tahsildar conducted an inquiry.

Several activists and political parties have taken up the issue demanding a judicial inquiry and action against those responsible for the death.

Protest was staged in Villianur and Madagadipet on Tuesday demanding booking of a case against those responsible.
