Staff at the Chief Secretariat rolled back the years, in a sartorial sense, by arriving for work in traditional dhotis to celebrate the International Dhoti Day on Friday.

For visitors to the Secretariat and passersby along the Promenade Beach in front of the Secretariat, it must have been an unusual sight as dhoti-clad Government secretaries and downline staff assembled in front of the building in the morning.

“It’s good to return to traditional attire once in a while…it feels comfortable,” said Chief Secretary Ashwani Kumar who also went the whole way with a laced drape flung across the shoulder. P. Jawahar, LAD Secretary, said it was important to revere one’s culture even in rapidly changing times.

The event was organised as symbolic tribute to a shared tradition, he said.
