‘Puducherry no more peaceful’

September 23, 2014 09:38 am | Updated 09:38 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Opposition Congress MLA A. Namassivayam on Monday said that Puducherry’s reputation as a peaceful area is fast losing sheen due to rise in the number of crimes. Taking up the law and order situation during Zero Hour, Mr. Namassivayam said that incidents of chain snatching, burglaries, robberies at gun point in and around Puducherry had instilled fear among the people.

Referring to a recent incident of a resident being threatened, in Sultanpet in Villianur, by a five-member gang he said gun culture was rearing its ugly head in Puducherry. He demanded the government to curb the activities of criminals with an iron hand. Criminals from the neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have been using Puducherry as a hideout for their activities. People are living in perpetual fear and the government should immediately act against criminals, he said.

Earlier, AIADMK Deputy Legislature leader A. Anbalagan demanded that the government order a judicial probe into issue of fake certificates to candidates to gain admission into professional colleges under the Government quota through the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC).

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, Mr. Anbalagan said that the sports quota was being misused and a number of candidates had got admission by claiming that they had won medals in “Attaya Pattaya” game.

Mr. Anbalagan said that he had information that a girl student hailing from Villupuram had got admission in a professional college after submitting a fake certificate that she belonged to other Backward Classes category. A group engaging in preparing fake certificates had procured admission for the students in collusion with a few officials in the government.
