The Puducherry government will strictly enforce the Union Health Ministry’s directive to fill 50% of PG seats in medical courses in private medical colleges, Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao said here on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Rao said that the government had complained to the Union Health Ministry to initiate action against private medical colleges that fail to surrender 50% of seats. All medical and dental colleges functioning in the UT refused to surrender the seats.
The territorial administration held several rounds of meetings with the managements of the private medical/dental colleges to persuade them to allocate 50% of seats as directed by the Union Government. The government has written to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare urging them to take necessary action against the colleges.
Mr. Rao said that the counselling for PG medical courses in government quota seats and those allotted to government in private medical colleges will be held on May 4 and 5. The original certificates of the candidates were verified on April 29 and 30.
The counselling for PG Dental courses in Government Dental College and seats in private dental colleges were held on May 2. All the seven seats in the Government Dental College and six seats in Mahe Institute of Dental Sciences, Mahe were filled up.
The government has also requested the Chairman of Fee Committee to fix the fees for PG medical/dental courses for the academic year 2017-18. The committee will be convened shortly to fix the fees. The government will leave no stone unturned to safeguard the interest of students, he added.
