Puducherry Budget: Focus on needs of children in education

The government had conducted camps to identify issues of disability and impairment among students of government schools, and based on the assessment, 85 students were provided spectacles and hearing aids, said Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh in his customary address on the first day of the budget session of the Puducherry Assembly on Wednesday.

Further, financial assistance was provided to nine students for eye surgery, and all children with special needs (CWSN) are provided with escort or transport allowance, said Mr. Singh.

He announced the constitution of a committee to prepare a Perspective Plan for development of school education. He said 1,28,000 students will be benefitted through the scheme for free uniforms and books in all government schools in the Union Territory. Around 2,000 teachers have been trained in innovative methods of teaching under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, he said.

Mr. Singh also said that the Puducherry State Higher Education Council would avail financial assistance towards infrastructure development in institutions under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme, the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).

Under the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Financial Assistance Scheme, Rs 31.70 crore was disbursed, while the number of student beneficiaries for this financial year is 7,074, he said. The Midday Meals Scheme has been revised to make it protein-rich, based on recommendations of the Department of Food and Nutrition, Pondicherry University.
