Members of central trade unions on Wednesday staged a demonstration in front of the Head post office here protesting against the Union Government’s decision to hike Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in railways and proposed amendment to labour laws.

General Secretary of Puducherry unit of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) V.S. Abishegam said that the Union Government was pursuing the same policies as the previous UPA government. He said that allowing FDI in railways and insurance sectors would pave the way for privatisation.

The proposed move of the government to amend the labour laws would empower the employers to retrench or lay off workers or declare closure at, or shut down, units at will and also resort to bring workers under the contractual basis.

All trade unions would strongly oppose the move, he said.
