The Puducherry Planning Authority (PPA) will inspect all high-rise residential buildings and structures under construction in the city from Monday to determine if they have violated building by-laws and safety norms.
PPA Chairman K.S.P. Ramesh said four teams led by a Junior Town Planner will start inspecting all high-rise residential buildings and multi-storey structures coming up in their jurisdiction.
If any deviations are found during the drive the PPA will issue show cause notices to the builders. The inspection will continue across the city, he said.
As many as 400 registered engineers and licensed supervisors are under the control of the PPA.
Inspection at all stages
The PPA along with teams of structural engineers would inspect all the structures at every stage to ensure that the builder does not deviate from the original plan.
Mr. Ramesh said PPA had asked the registered engineers and concerned civil engineers to maintain a register of the inspections.
The teams will inspect at the plinth level, lintel level and finally after the construction is completed.
The teams will systematically verify if construction in the projects identified was according to the approved plan or if the structure had deviations, violations or change in design.
Soil tests
Soil test reports of major buildings and projects will be referred to structural engineers and experts at Pondicherry Engineering College and IIT, Chennai to get their approval.
Mr. Ramesh said the PPA had been conducting periodical inspection of high-rise buildings in the city. PPA has decided to strengthen the building by-laws and regulations without compromising on safety measures.
The drive comes in the wake of a multi-storey building which had been declared unsafe after cracks appeared on one of the columns of the structure.
A technical team of the PPA had inspected the multi-storey structure which had been declared unsafe after cracks appeared on one of the columns of the structure.
The builder has now started demolition of the structure and a report would be submitted to the Madras High Court, he added.
