Police cane protesting transgenders

October 21, 2017 12:53 am | Updated 12:53 am IST - Puducherry

Members of the transgender community on Friday resorted to a road blockade on Maraimalai Adigal Salai after the police resorted to caning to disperse the protesters.

Sources said that a group of transgenders was creating nuisance by demanding money.

They were also allegedly harassing the public at the new bus stand. The police resorted to mild caning and issued a warning to them.

Irked by this, the transgenders blocked traffic on the Maraimalai Adigal Salai alleging that the police were targeting the community. A few of them also created a ruckus by threatening to undress in public during the protest.

The police arrested and took them to Uppalam. They were later let off with a stern warning.
