September 14, 2014 11:40 am | Updated 11:40 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Care Givers of Puducherry has urged the Puducherry Government to appoint special teachers for differently-abled students in all government and government aided schools in the Union Territory (UT).

R. Saravanan, secretary of the Association, said that at present there were 18 special teachers for around 3,000 differently-abled students studying from class I to XII in government and aided schools in the UT. All these teachers had been appointed by the government on a temporary basis.

As per the directions of the Delhi High Court and the guidelines of the Rehabilitation Council of India there must be one special teacher for five differently-abled students. Hence, the government should appoint adequate number of special teachers in all the schools to provide proper education to the differently-abled children.
