Plan to crack down on encroachments deferred

The Puducherry Municipal administration on Thursday deferred its proposed plan to crack down on illegal encroachments on platforms and roads in the Boulevard area.

In a stern message to encroachers, the Puducherry Municipal Administration had set last Wednesday as deadline to remove encroachments on pavements, platforms and roads. The municipality also warned them if they failed to remove the illegal structures such encroachments would be removed in a phased manner from Thursday.

A massive crack down exercise was planned by municipal authorities. They wanted it to be executed from Thursday and had taken up several steps towards this initiative.

The authorities have issued individual notices to nearly 120 residents in the boulevard area.

An inter-departments task force had been constituted to conduct crackdown against the illegal encroachments.

All machineries and manpower had been kept ready for the drive.

An official, on condition of anonymity said, “Following instructions from the government, we had to postpone our plan temporarily but the drive will commence after some time.”
