Pinarayi calls for probe into organ theft

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday wrote to his Tamil Nadu counterpart Edappadi Palaniswami urging him to order a probe into the complaint filed by the family members of a youth hailing from Meenakshipuram in Palakkad district against a private hospital in Salem alleging that his internal organs had been removed.

Mr. Vijayan said the youth and seven others were injured at a place called Kallikurussi while returning to Meenakshipuram from Chennai. They were admitted to a nearby hospital, but later taken to the Vinayaka Super Speciality Hospital, 120 km away.

On May 22, the doctors of the hospital declared that one of the injured, Manikandan, suffered brain death. He was put on ventilator. The hospital authorities demanded ₹3 lakh as treatment charges. They also demanded ₹25,000 for taking the body to Meenakshipuram.

Since the family did not have the amount, they were asked to sign a few papers. The internal organs were removed before the body was handed over to the family members. They did not hand over the post-mortem report and other relevant documents, said the Chief Minister and sought an inquiry.
