Petitioner to appeal against verdict

Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister K. Lakshminarayanan said he would appeal against the Madras High Court order dismissing his petition challenging the appointment of BJP leaders as nominated MLAs in the Supreme Court.

“We will file an appeal in the apex court against the High Court order,” he said.

Sources in the ruling Congress said the Chief Minister was in touch with party top brass in New Delhi to decide on the future course of action.

He had convened a meeting of Ministers and party legislators late in the evening to discuss the court order.

Reacting to the High Court order, the Chief Minister said a detailed response would be given after studying the judgment.

“The petitioners are free to go for appeal against the High Court order. We are only respondents in the case and not petitioners,” he told reporters.

All eyes on Speaker

All eyes are now on Speaker V. Vaithilingam as he had categorically rejected the appointment of nominated MLAs on the ground that it was not done by “competent authority.”

He had rejected the request made by Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi to provide facilities to the nominated members in the House, including rooms, identity cards and seating arrangements in the Assembly.

Mr. Vaithilingam told The Hindu that he would react after getting a copy of the court order.
