Fighting for wages: Members of PASIC Employees’ Union, affiliated to the AITUC, on fast on Thursday.

Employees of the Pondicherry Agro Service and Industries Corporation (PASIC) on Thursday observed a day- long fast at Thattanchavady to protest non-payment of salary for the last 24 months.

The employees of PASIC, a government undertaking, have been fighting with the government for disbursal of salary.

According to them, the management had failed to disburse salary to 300-odd employees, including voucher-based and daily wage workers, for the last two years.

Since its inception in 1986, PASIC has been the nodal agency for the distribution of agricultural inputs such as fertilizers.

Debt trap

It slipped into a debt trap after the management decided to diversify its business, said an employee. Without heeding the advice of employees, the management entered into other businesses, including opening of liquor outlets. The financial mismanagement contributed to the present plight of the organisation. It had an outstanding loan of ₹10 crore, said another worker.

He recalled the role played by the organisation even in management of garbage.

It had developed low--cost technology to dispose of garbage and solid waste generated in the town, said another employee.
