A 24-year-old student from Pakistan, Ali Hassan Raza, was assaulted by unidentified persons early on Tuesday on the Pondicherry University campus while he was asleep in the hostel room.

“We are conducting investigation based on a complaint from him,” Superintendent of Police (North) Praveen Kumar Tripathi told The Hindu. “Very soon we will nab the culprits.”

Lieutenant Governor Virendra Kataria visited him and enquired about his health.

Mr. Raza completed his post-graduation at the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute for South Asia Regional Cooperation in the university.

“We are investigating with security personnel of the university and co-students,” Mr. Tripathi said. “The victim said he did not suspect anyone.”

People-to-people diplomacy

In August 2012, The Hindu reported that Mr. Raza was the first Pakistani student to be enrolled in the university, making him a symbol of people-to-people diplomacy.
