A comprehensive oral health programme for children affected with HIV was held at Shanthi Bhavan HIV/AIDS patients’ home in Chinna Kalapet near here recently. The camp was organised as a social initiative by Dr. Guy Patrick Sandou of Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences (IGIDS) with pharmaceutical support from Dr. Reddy’s Lab and Exeltis Ordain Health Care.

A team of doctors including faculty, interns, social workers and technicians from the Department of Public Health Dentistry of IGIDS provided basic treatment for the children such as scaling, restoration and extraction.

Many of the children had high level of dental caries and a few had oral lesions associated with HIV infection.

A few children who required specialised treatment were referred to IGIDS for specialist care.
