The Election Commission is likely to conduct a one-day poll to the lone Lok Sabha seat in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

It is also contemplating conduct of the poll on same date of polling in Tamil Nadu to avoid confusion and chances of impersonation.

A senior official in the Chief Electoral Office told The Hindu that going by the current law and order situation, one-day poll was possible in Puducherry. It had been communicated to the Election Commission of India. Besides, a report on law and order situation, examination schedule, festival and other important events in the four regions of Puducherry had also been submitted to the Election Commission to help it take a decision on the schedule of election process.

The EC’s instructions on shifting of officials including police personnel, who had completed three years of service in a place, had been sent to the government and the department. The Chief Electoral Office had received inputs that the transfers were taking place.
