A scan centre in Mahalakshmi Hospital at Mandarakuppam near Neyveli was sealed and its licence revoked on Friday. On the direction of the Director of Health Services, Chennai, and Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar a team of medical officers inspected the scan centre.

During the field test the team found certain medical equipment and incriminating documents to the effect that it had been carrying on the prenatal sex determination tests for quite a long time. The team also served a notice to the hospital founder Dr. Ramachandran instructing him to go over to Chennai and give an explanation to the Director of Health Services.

After enquiry, the provisions of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act would be invoked against the hospital. Joint Director (Health) Dr. R. Krishnamoorthy told The Hindu that the hospital had acquired notoriety for conducting the sex determination test in the foetus.
