For the first time, the Auroville Language Lab (ALL) is offering a certified German language learning course.

Expected to roll out on Monday, the German Beginners Certification Course is a two-and-a-half month beginners version that packs about 60 hours of class.

It will help students to prepare for the A1 Certification exam to be held at Max Mueller Bhavan in Chennai later. Classes will be three days a week, for two hours each, (4 pm to 6pm) to cover the requirements of 60 hours.

The 10-week class starting on Monday is expected to go on until March 12.

“We launch a language programme as and when a volunteer becomes available,” said Mita Radhakrishnan, ALL director.

The German programme, for instance, became possible when Erika Eggemann, a German teacher with over 40 years of experience, volunteered to lead the course.

Ms. Eggemann, who also intends to turn an Aurovillian, was previously teaching German for about 40 years in Italy and for two years in Bengaluru, where she says the demand for learning the language, which is believed by many students as a gateway to employability in Germany.

The ALL wants to keep the course “a fun and enjoyable way” to learn German, with lots of games, a bit of grammar and an emphasis on conversation and communication.

Students will already start writing and acting out dialogues from the fourth session. This is also a refresher course for those who have picked up a little German already.

Ms. Radhakrishnan said this could also be unique opportunity for students and adults in the region to learn German.
