NLC India Ltd. has given a new dimension to biodiversity conservation by introducing integrated fish farming.

Under its corporate social responsibility plan, NLCIL developed its Kundan Kulam tank, a natural water body spread over nine acres, into seven ponds to breed fish varieties such as Catla, Botla, Rogu, Grass Carp, Mirgal and Prawn.

Chairman and managing director of NLCIL Sarat Kumar Acharya in his inaugural address said integrated aquaculture was the right approach where fish farming and conservation would increase productivity of water, land and associated resources in their natural habitat.

The project was aimed at promoting sustainable development.

“It is not for profit making but to contribute and to promote sustainable development of interlinked social and ecological systems, as part of biodiversity activities,” he said.

The project, the release said, would help encourage farmers in the neighbouring villages to adopt fish farming.

Functional directors Rakesh Kumar, P. Selvakumar, R. Vikraman, and M. Muthu were present.
