The Neyveli Lignite Corporation has been doing a great deal for the promotion of education, particularly that of girl students.
To encourage girl students to excel in their studies the NLC has instituted awards to be given away annually to the toppers in the Plus Two and the Secondary School Leaving Certificate public examinations, according to B. Surender Mohan, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the NLC.
The annual award comprises a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, a medal and a certificate each. Last year, the NLC gave away the award to eight such meritorious students from the matriculation and the CBSE streams. This year, as a special gesture the NLC had included the top scoring girl students from the Tamil medium schools too. Thus, a total of 18 students were felicitated by the Chairman at a function held at the Lignite Hall here on Saturday.
The awardees included V. Divya of Jawahar Matriculation Higher Secondary School who stood first in the Plus Two (CBSE stream), and, twins T.S. Aarthi and T.S. Anitaa who stood first and second respectively in the State Board syllabus.
In the SSLC examinations T. Ponmozhi of Jawahar Mat. Hr. Sec. School, S. Karthiga and R. Deepakala of St. Joseph’s of Cluny stood first, and, K.C. Padmapriya and M. Ramya of Jawahar High School stood second.
The achievers in Tamil medium are: H. Arul Devi and K. Elakkia of NLC Government High School who secured first and second ranks in the Plus Two examinations, and, R. Abinaya and R. Karthika of Mandarakuppam government high school who obtained first and second ranks in SSLC examinations.
The Chairman said that besides focusing utmost attention on improving upon its performance, in terms of lignite production and power generation, year after year the NLC had been encouraging education of not only the children of its employees but also those from the peripheral areas. Of the total number of 35,000 students studying in the NLC-run schools 17,000 are girls. Of them 6,000 girls are hailing from the surrounding places. As many as 4,200 students are studying in the government-aided NLC schools.
The Chairman further stated that through academic excellence the award winning students had brought laurels to their parents, teachers, the institutions and the NLC. He called upon the parents and teachers to adequately motivate the students to achieve great success in their career.
C. Senthamilselvan and P. Sathiamoorthy, president and secretary of the NLC Common School Committee, K. Gopalakrishnan, chief manager (education), and NLC Directors Rakesh Kumar, S. Rajagopal and S. Boopathy and Chief Vigilance Officer Shivraj Singh and others participated.
