The National Green Tribunal, Chennai, has in an interim order barred further construction on the Union Territory’s first shopping mall.
The NGT Bench comprising its judicial member Justice P.Jyothimani and expert member P.S.Rao passed the interim order of injunction restraining the project proponent from carrying on further construction after hearing an application filed by S.Kasinathan, a social activist of Saram, who alleged that the building was being constructed without mandatory environmental clearance.
The applicant also said as the construction activity was carried out in a prime area opposite the Puducherry Court complex, the mall would aggravate traffic congestion and vehicular pollution.
The Bench has posted the matter for further hearing on April 29 and issued notices to Union Government and Puducherry Government.
