A meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee involving government departments that deal with implementation of welfare schemes discussed ways to improve the systems in place.

The meeting, convened by P. Rajavelu, Welfare Minister, also chalked out the modalities to bring in new social welfare initiatives within the allocated budget.

The secretaries and heads of various departments and chairmen of Corporations / Boards and the Secretary to Legislative Assembly participated in the meeting to evaluate the ongoing schemes implemented the by Social Welfare Department, Adi Dravidar Welfare Department, Women and Child Welfare Department, Labour and Tourism Department.

Schemes concerning tourism, which is a core sector looked upon to generate more revenue, were discussed in detail. Measures to implement schemes formulated under the Central Sponsored Scheme (CSS) were also taken up so that the Union Territory gets more tourists.

Also figuring prominently in the discussions were the schemes run by the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department that impact the delivery of education, health and civic amenities for the underprivileged.

The issues faced by the differently abled persons and labourers in private factories were also discussed and steps outlined to provide suitable rehabilitation to these sections.

Mr. Rajavelu assured members that Rs. 4 lakh as subsidy under the SCP fund would be released immediately and measures taken to address issues concerning the issuance of pattas and name transfers.
