Infuriated over the lethargic attitude and late coming of government employees to office, Chief Minister V.Narayanasamy on Monday warned of stringent action against the erring staff and asked the senior officials to ensure that the staff reported for work on time.

Mr. Narayanasamy, accompanied by the Education Minister R. Kamalakannan and Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy, made surprise visits to a few government-run institutions on Monday morning.

They first visited the government-run Amudhasurabhi Co-operative Society which is located at the heart of the city. When they reached the building, most of the employees were yet to turn up.

CM expresses displeasure

Shocked over the sight of so many empty chairs in the opening hour, the Chief Minister expressed his displeasure to the director of department concerned and demanded an explanation.

“Over 80 per cent of employees have not turned up for work until now. What kind of work culture is this? I do not approve of this kind of attitude. If this is what happens at an office located at the heart of the city, what will be the plight of offices in rural areas,” Mr. Narayanasamy asked.

His next stop was a show-room of Amudhasurabhi where he asked the officials about their daily income.

He wondered, “When there are 30,000 members in the society, why not even 200 of them bought its products?

Here eight employees are working in the show-room and earning a meagre income. How can we turn the society around?”

The Chief Minister was furious when he found no one inside the Puducherry Urban Co-Operative Bank, at 9.45 a.m., which is located on the busy Jawaharlal Nehru Street. Only one official was there to greet him.

Waited for employees

Mr. Narayanasamy said, “Over 80 persons are working here and only one person is present at the opening time. How can we run this institution successfully?.”

He and other ministers sat at the empty cabins and waited until the employees arrived. The latecomers had some explaining to do about their delay.

Later talking to reporters, Mr. Narayanasamy said the lethargic attitude of employees must end and they should extend co-operation to the government for better administration.

“We have asked the official to prepare a plan of action to run the co-operative societies profitably”, he said.

The Chief Minister and ministers conducted a review meeting at the Pondicherry Milk Producers Co-operative Society too.
