Sending out a clear message on preserving party unity, the Congress has warned of strict action against those who indulged in anti-party activities in some of the Assembly constituencies that had damaged the image of the party and led to the defeat of its candidates.
Addressing party workers after paying tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of his 25th death anniversary at the party office here on Saturday, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president A. Namassivayam said that the party had performed well in the recent Assembly elections annexing 15 out of the 21 seats it contested in alliance with the DMK.
Describing the results as a historic win for the Congress, Mr. Namassivayam said that the party could have bettered its record since it had scope of winning a few more Assembly segments.
There were, however, complaints that a section of party men had indulged in anti-party activities leading to the poor showing of the party candidates. This is a very serious matter and the party would not remain silent without resorting to disciplinary action against the traitors, he said.
Mr. Namassivayam, who is tipped to be the choice for the post of Chief Minister, asked Block Congress Committee presidents and party candidates to lodge formal complaints with the PCC so that the party could take action to rid the Congress of mischievous functionaries and traitors.
Recalling the contributions made by former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, he said that the Congress had indentified itself with the welfare of the people and in Puducherry it had now performed well regaining the faith of the people.
Taking a dig at the outgoing Rangasamy headed AINRC Government; he said that Mr. Rangasamy had failed to measure up to the expectations of the people.
CLP meet
“Now an opportunity has been given to us by the people and we would spare no efforts to come out with people centric measures. All functionaries in the Congress should work hard in the larger interest of the party,” he said.
Later talking to reporters, Mr. Namassivayam said the meeting to elect the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader would be held in the next few days and the Ministry would also be formed as early as possible.
Asked whether the DMK would be inducted into the cabinet, he said that everything would be decided after a final meeting of Congress MLAs. Senior leaders and the party functionaries later left for Sriperumbudur to pay homage at the memorial of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
