After a gap of 19 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Puducherry on Sunday to participate in the golden jubilee of Auroville and other events.

This was Mr. Modi’s first visit to Puducherry after becoming the Prime Minister.

He had visited Puducherry in 1999.

He is among the few Prime Ministers who visited the Union Territory and acquainted themselves with its multifarious features.

Mr. Modi visited Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education (SAICE).

Causes gridlock

Meanwhile, diversion of traffic and regulation of vehicular movement for Mr. Modi’s visit caused hardship to the local people and tourists flocking the city as part of their weekend visit.

Hawkers and pushcart vendors near the ashram were asked to vacate. Shops were closed since morning although the Prime Minister reached the spot around 10.30 a.m. The shops were allowed to be opened after Mr. Modi left for Auroville.
