Mobile phone prevalence pretty high in rural areas

The rural areas of the Union Territory of Puducherry appear to have taken to the mobile phone with 76.34 per cent households owning it, in comparison to the all India figure of 68.35 per cent rural households, according to the Socio Economic and Caste Census released by the Centre on Friday.

The Union Territory of Puducherry has 41.16 per cent of households in rural areas, while 58.84 per cent of households are in urban areas.

The Socio Economic and Caste Census, which gives information on various factors like regions, categories (SC, ST, disabled and women-headed households), assets and sources of income, revealed that 39.26 per cent of rural households in Puducherry are landless households which derive a major part of their income from manual casual labour.

It also revealed that 42.67 per cent of rural households in the UT own a two-wheeler. With the UT (including all enclaves) being on the coast, it has 800 households with motorised fishing boats in its rural areas.
