Voicing concern over the increasing incidence of sexual abuse cases in Cuddalore district, Chidambaram MLA K. Balakrishnan has called for a CB-CID enquiry.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr Balakrishnan attributed the rise in crimes against women to the smugness of the police. In a series of sexual harassment cases against teenage girls in the past few months the police had arrested 21 persons from three districts.
Since the sex related offences had wider ramifications as the perpetrators had spread over more than one district he called for a CB-CID enquiry to trace the root cause and to deal sternly with the offenders.
He noted that two school girls, studying in Classes VII and IX at Thittakudi, were subjected to sexual exploitations by many, including a priest and certain political persons.Though the parents had lodged police complaints on June 10 the law enforcing officials took cognizance of the crime only after it was flashed up in the media and rather belatedly on August 5.
It looked as if a large network was operating behind the unpalatable incident. In another instance, Mr Balakrishnan noted that certain youths abducted a 13-year-old girl from Sirkazhi and after gang rape killed her and abandoned the body in a canal at M.G.R.Thittu near Chidambaram.
In yet another incident four youths gang raped a 13-year-old girl at Pudhuchathiram and captured and posted the objectionable pictures on the mobile phones. A woman was found recently in an unconscious condition on the Manimutharu riverbed after she was gang-raped supposedly by 11 persons.
A teacher at Sangolikuppam misbehaved with the girl students after exposing them to the sexual contents on the Internet. The MLA attributed the rise in such sex-related crimes to the apathy and the belated action of the police.
It was admitted in the Assembly recently that the sexual harassment cases were on the rise. Therefore, he appealed to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to grant a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to each of these victims.
Later, the MLA handed over a memorandum to Superintendent of Police A.Radhika seeking appropriate action against those indulging in such crimes.
She promised to speed up the enquiries in such of those cases.
