A delegation of AIADMK legislators on Thursday met Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi seeking her intervention in checking irregularities in the MBBS admissions.
In a memorandum, the AIADMK stated that as stipulated by the Supreme Court judgments and Medical Council of India norms, 50 per cent of seats in private medical colleges should be reserved for the government to sponsor its candidates through the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC).
“It is regrettable to note that ever since these colleges came into being, 50 per cent of the allocation of seats was never filled up,” the memorandum said.
While the seven private medical colleges together hold 1,050 seats, 525 seats need to be released to the CENTAC for admitting local students. However, the government has heavily compromised with private medical colleges in securing only 273 seats, the memorandum alleged.
It also alleged that private medical colleges under the guise of deemed universities were deceiving the government and reaping profits.
PG seats
The AIADMK also raised the non-allocation of seats in the post graduate courses. Against the 266 PG seats in the private sector, the MCI stipulation that 50 per cent of the seats would be filled by the State and the rest by managements, the provision has been overlooked in Puducherry.
The AIADMK squarely blamed the successive governments for not insisting on the 50 per cent norm for sharing seats with the CENTAC thereby releasing a bulk of medical seats for profiteering forces.
The few poor students who manage to complete MBBS with assistance from the Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Education Scheme are deprived of opportunities to pursue PG education, the AIADMK said.
“The inescapable conclusion is that the government is wilfully not enforcing the provisions of the notification of the MCI just to help the private medical colleges to earn huge money. It is high time the government intervened in this matter,” the memorandum to the Lt. Governor said.
The party squarely blamed successive governments for not insisting on the 50 per cent norm for sharing seats with CENTAC
