The Mahakumbabishekam (consecration) of the Manakula Vinayagar temple will be performed on April 3. Preparations are in full swing for the event. N.Karunakaran, executive officer of temple said. “Renovations began in March 2013 at an estimated cost of Rs. 6 crore.”
The presiding deity was earlier known as ‘vellakara (white) Vinayagar’, as this place was part of the town where French and white people lived in harmony.
According to the Sthalapuranam, efforts were made to remove the deity from the present place. Once it was even thrown into sea. But every time it was moved it was reinstated in its present location. Later a temple was built as per the Ganapathy Agamam and it was named as the Bhuvanesa Vinayagar temple.
For the consecration, artisans are refurbishing the walls of the praharams. The front Mandap vithanam is being embellished. Space has been provided in the northern side of the temple to house the chariots (gold and silver).
