The Muthialpet police on Wednesday arrested Gilbert, a 40-year-old speech and hearing impaired man on charges of sexually abusing his three-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Police sources said Gilbert had been abusing the girl while his wife was away at work.
Though the neighbours complained that the child was crying in her absence the mother failed to take note of it seriously.
The shocking incident came to light when the mother returned to the house after work and witnessed her husband abusing the child. She attacked Gilbert with a wooden log and lodged a complaint with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). An enquiry confirmed sexual assault.
The mother lodged a complaint with the Muthialpet police who booked him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and remanded him to custody in the Kalalpet Central Prison.
