The police on Sunday arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the rape and murder of a 60-year-old woman. The name of the arrested person was given as Prakash of Paavanar Nagar in Boomianpet. He is said to be a notorious criminal and accused in several cases.

The victim, a resident of Thendral Nagar in New Saram, had been missing since December 27. When all attempts to find her failed, her family lodged a complaint with the D. Nagar police station.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Law and Order) Rajiv Ranjan said the victim’s mutilated body was found in a coconut grove on Othavadai Street in New Saram on January 3. The victim was stabbed in several places and preliminary investigations by the police revealed it to be a case of murder by strangulation and stabbing.

The police rounded up Prakash as a suspect in the case based on the examination of witnesses and neighbours.

Investigations by the police revealed that the accused Prakash went to a coconut grove for consuming liquor. The victim, who was in the habit of consuming liquor, was collecting coconuts in the grove.

The accused made sexual advances towards her.

When she resisted, Prakash slapped and hit her on the head. When the victim swooned, he raped and allegedly murdered her.

The accused confessed to his involvement in the crime. A mobile phone and a knife were recovered from him.
