Coming down hard on common traffic violations, Inspector General of Police Praveer Ranjan said a public movement towards adherence to traffic rules, including the voluntary wearing of helmet while riding a two-wheeler was necessary.

He was speaking at a helmet-wearing awareness rally at Beach Road organised by the Puducherry Traffic Police on Friday evening.

Mr. Ranjan said that Puducherry would follow Tamil Nadu soon in implementation of the helmet rule. He said it was ‘advisable and practical’ to implement the rule here.

Citing as common violations, over speeding, driving without a licence and overloading, he said an increasing number of road accidents involve two wheelers, he said, adding that of 87 accidents this year, 17 lives which were lost belonged to two-wheeler riders. He added that the authorities were exploring options for multi-modal means of transport.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Kannan Jagadeesan said that residents must make obeying traffic rules and wearing a helmet a habit.

Mr. Ranjan inaugurated seven digital sign boards to be placed in important road junctions and CDs with films to create awareness on traffic rules, which will be telecast on local cable channels.

He said it was practical to implement the rule in Puducherry
