Tamil outfits called for a bandh to condemn AP killing

Normal life was hit in the city as most shops and commercial establishments downed shutters on Wednesday following a bandh call by a few Tamil outfits to condemn the killing of 20 Tamil woodcutters in Andhra Pradesh. However, government and private offices functioned normally.

Several shops and commercial establishments downed their shutters in main streets. Commuters to certain rural areas urban areas were affected as the private bus operators did not operate their buses to rural areas. However, Government buses operated services from Puducherry bus stand.Uncertainty

Since morning, there was a sense of uncertainty among traders on whether or not to open their shops. Shops on Anna Salai, Nehru Street, Mission Street and Maraimalai Adigal Salai and elsewhere in the rural areas were closed. Most outlets at Goubert Market also remain closed. Police personnel stood guard at important intersections to pre-empt untoward incidents.
