Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh on Tuesday honoured departments which contributed the maximum amount to the Armed Forces Flag Day fund during 2013.

A sum of Rs. 50.67 lakh was collected from various departments, institutions, organisations and the public last year. For the third consecutive year, the Education Department topped the list by contributing Rs. 20.93 lakh followed by the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management with Rs. 4.38 lakh and the Public Works Department (PWD) with Rs. 1.75 lakh.

Among other organisations Jipmer had made the highest collection with Rs. 3.88 lakh.

Mr. Singh said Flag Day observed on December 7 is an occasion to salute and acknowledge the sacrifice made by defence forces. The armed forces are one institution that everybody is proud of, he said.

“We are not a front line State and don’t have borders like other states. Yet the people of Puducherry are extremely conscious of the great services that the armed forces provide and perform for the nation,” he said.

Mr. Singh urged the people to generously contribute to the fund and continue their unswerving support to the armed forces in the coming years.
