Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has directed Director-General of Police S.K. Gautam to conceptualise a proposal in consultation with the Director of Health and Family Welfare Services to constitute a committee comprising doctors from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) and Government General Hospital to examine cases of medical negligence.

According to a release from Raj Nivas, news reports have been time and again appearing in newspapers about doctors being attacked for alleged wrong treatment or medical negligence.

A few reports have also appeared about people laying siege to hospitals/institutions causing damage to property.

Ms. Bedi said that to deal with the complaints of medical negligence or wrong treatment, the opinion and recommendation of a professional team could be obtained by the Director-General of Police for taking appropriate action.

The Supreme Court had passed directions for constitution of a peer group to evaluate the cases of alleged medical negligence.

The constitution of a committee of doctors would go a long way in putting to rest the controversies that erupt when complaints of medical negligence or wrong treatment surface, she added.
