BJP leader and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi will assume charge as Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Puducherry on Sunday evening.
Chief Justice of Madras High Court Sanjay Kishen Kaul will administer the oath of office and secrecy to her at a swearing-in ceremony, which will be held on the lawns of Raj Nivas.
Ms. Bedi is the first woman in the country to have joined the officer ranks of Indian Police Service (IPS). She served in it for 35 years and moved up to the highest rank, as Director General of Police Research and Development (BPR&D).
She had served as police adviser to Secretary General in United Nations in the Department of Peace Keeping Operations in New York. Ms. Bedi was appointed Lieutenant Governor of UT last week, a post that has been vacant for the past two years.
The Union Territory was under the additional charge of Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lt. Gen. A.K. Singh after the Narendra Modi Government sacked UPA nominee Virendra Kataria on July 2014.
