The Cuddalore police on Sunday rescued a businessman hours after he was kidnapped by unidentified men in Panruti on Saturday night.

According to the police, Vijayarangan, 46, a Congress functionary and businessman from Kamaraj Nagar in Panruti, was returning home on a two-wheeler when a gang waylaid him. The accused also assaulted Mr. Vijayarangan and bundled him into a car.

Locals who spotted the gang informed Mr. Vijayarangan’s brother Vijayaraghavan who alerted the police. They tried to nab the accused based on the leads available. But the accused dumped Mr. Vijayarangan near Perumal Eri and fled the scene. Mr. Vijayarangan then admitted himself to a private hospital, the police said. The Panruti police have registered a case.
