Jipmer launches health education video as part of World Glaucoma Week

Raising awareness about early detection of glaucoma, prevention of irreversible blindness from the condition that damages the optic nerve was the focus of a Jipmer health education initiative held recently.

Dr. S.C. Parija, Jipmet Director, who launched a health education video as part of World Glaucoma Week observance, stressed the importance of glaucoma screening and advised necessary medical advice in this regard.

The ongoing health education initiatives that have become community concerns, are aimed at disseminating health awareness and thereby creating a vigilant society, Dr. Parija said.

The session on glaucoma on this year’s theme ‘Beat Invisible Glaucoma’ was the 41st interactive event held as part of the health education initiative launched in 2015 under the auspices of the Jipmer Health for All Forum.

Panel discussion

The glaucoma awareness video was projected to the public and this was followed by a panel discussion led by specialists from Department of Ophthalmology.

The experts included Dr. Renuka Srinivasan, senior professor, Dr. Ramesh Babu K, Additional Professor and Head and Dr. Subashini Kaliaperumal, additional professor. M. Sampaul, Medical Social Worker, Medical Social Services Wing, Jipmer, moderated the session.

More than 300 people including glaucoma patients, general public and Jipmer staff participated.

The session was also telecast live to all Medical Colleges of South India under National Medical College Network (NMCN) project through Jipmer Regional Resource Centre.
